This man is my GGGGfather. Family has a photo of Elizabeth his wife, known to us as the Lady Varalla. We have family notes that he died in 1870 ref CN Tas 167 but I can't locate this or his grave. Son Nicholas is buried at Cornelian Bay.




Female child Elizabeth VARELLA born 20 Sept 1849 at Hobart. Record has name as "BARELLA". Father - Nicholas Barella. Mother - Elizabeth Barella, formerly Gage, houseservant. (ref. 33/1/3 no. 1837)




Nichola VARELLA was convicted at Warwick on 22 March 1838 for manslaughter - person died, 9 days after being stuck with a poker. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Coromandel' arriving 25 Oct 1838. Ship Surgeon's Report: "Clean, correct and very regular". Single man' aged 22 yrs; musician - plays the harpe; 5'5" height; dark complexion; black hair; dk brown eyes. Native place of birth: Italy (ref. Convict Indent Record) Van Diemen's Land: Assignments. Conduct Record. 15 Dec 1846: Ticket of Leave granted. Married Elizabeth GAGE. Male Child Nicola VARALLA born 1 Dec 1850 at Hobart. Father - Nicola VARALLA, labourer. Mother - Elizabeth GAGE.
