John Varley was transported on the Royal Admiral, departing 28th Feb 1800 and arriving 20th Nov 1800 with 305 passengers.
The Royal Admiral was built at Lynn in 1828. Convicts were transported to New South Wales on the Royal Admiral in 1830, 1833, 1835 and to Van Diemen's Land in 1842. 1833 - Ship; Royal Admiral. Commenced fitting as a Convict Transport at Deptford on the 29 March. Surgeon Superintendent [Andrew Henderson] joined on the 3rd April. Guard embarked on the 13th. Sailed on the 17th and anchored in Kingston Barbour near Dublin on the 9th May. 220 convicts embarked on the 16 May 1833 and the ship sailed from Dublin Bay for Sydney on the 4th June and arrived there on the 20 October. Originally embarked with 221 convicts, 5 Died at sea, 1 was Relanded. 11 sick on shore, The convicts were described as 220 such wretchedly debilitated creatures ... 1828 John Varley, Trial Sentence 7 years; arrived per ship Royal Admiral 1800; Current Status: Free by Servitude; Employment: Labourer, Householder John Crawley, Census District North Richmond NSW. 1832 18 November John Varley 58 Years Religion: Protestant, Arrived per Royal Admiral 1792 Current Status: Free by Servitude Householder: John Crawley Census District: North Richmond. There was no John Varley on the 1972 voyage of the Royal Admiral, but he was definitely on the 1800 voyage. He seems to be the only John Varley convicted at this time.




John Varley's actual crime was stealing silver and a cup with John Wilkinson. John Varley, James Nicol and John Wilkinson were convicted together and were on the Royal Admiral together.




John Varley was convicted with John Wilkinson and James Nicol and all three were aboard the Royal Admiral.




John Varley was tried 10 Apr 1799 at Lancaster Quarter Sessions A John Vale was recorded as a convict working as Govt Miller on Norfolk Island in the muster of Feb 1805, and continued to be recorded as such in returns through to 1812. He died on Norfolk Island 6 May 1812 as John Vale, Govt Miller, arrived per Royal Admiral 1800
