On Tuesday, a … was lodged at York Castle, against Richard Roper, alias Long, and William Varley, alias Foster, alias Brown, who stand charged with robbing the Rev. Mr. Preston's house, at Moreby, for having on the i15th January last, broke and escaped from the county gaol of Nottingham, where they were detained on suspicion of burglary, committed in  that county. Leeds Mercury, 8 Feb 1817 Assize Intelligence. YORK. The following are the prisoners who have been capitally convicted, and who have received sentence of death :— Varley, … for burglary, … The two first in this sad enumeration were executed on Monday the 17th inst.— ... and Varley  are likewise to suffer; the rest are reprieved.  Manchester Mercury, 1 April 1817.  William Varley, who remained for execution with the above, for robbing the house of his former master the Rev Thos. Preston of Moorby Hall, in the East Riding, was reprieved. Lancaster Gazette, 19 April 1817.  The following male convicts left the Castle, on Monday morning, to be delivered on board the Retribution Hulk at Sheerness, up the river Medway, viz.— William Varley, … to be severally transported for life.
