I sent for what seemed to be the death certificate of an Ephraim Vernon in Hobart 1888. However it appears he was not the correct person. This was a Wheelwright. The convict Ephraim Vernon ended up in Auckland, New Zealand where he died 04 May 1900. He is in the Electoral Records for New Zealand practicing the trade he had on board the Pestonjee Bomanjee (Baker). Ron Hurdus 02 Aug 2015

Ephraim was christened at Tunstall, Staffordshire, England 20 Jul 1828. son of John Vernon a grocer and corn dealer. Transported after his 3rd conviction. Married Mary Crane at Norbury, Cheshire, England whilst both were still minors. After his transportation his wife Mary would have nothing more to do with him and declared herself a widow. When her daughter Eliza married William Hurdus (my Grandfather) She went to live as housekeeper to them until she died in 1901 without ever acknowledging a husband in Tsmania. Ephraim does not seem to have remarried and I have circumstantial evidence that he died in New Zealand 04 May 1900. Even after his freedom he appears in Tasmanian Police Records a few times - one notable event is in 1861 his "losing" 200 sheep!! Oatlands, Tas. Ron Hurdus 11 Oct 2014.
