Thomas Virgoe was transported on the John Calvin, departing 9th May 1846 and arriving 21st Sep 1846 with 201 passengers.

Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Thomas Virgoe was convicted at Hereford on 30/03/1846 of Burglary, stealing money and other articles. 10yr transportation sentence. Gaol Report: First conviction Ship Surgeon's Report: Good Aged 20yrs; Protestant; can read; 5'4"; brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native Place: Hereford. Parents: William & Mary. Station Gang: Norfolk Island (1847-1849) 01/06/1849: Wm Walker, Goulbourne St. Hobart - drunk. 1 mths imprisonment and hard labour. 170 days gained by hard work. Assignments: 1849 - Huon; 1850 - Browns River; Port Esperence & Oyster Cove. Ticket of Leave 01/04/1851 Conditional Pardon 24/05/1853 June 1853: Application for permission to marry Margaret Behan (convict transported on Australasia). approved. Married at Kingston on 26/07/1853. Thomas recorded as a sawyer/splitter. Children: Mary Ann b. 05/07/1856 Huon Ellen b. 28/05/1858 Franklin male child b. 04/10/1862 Esperence female child b. 29/08/1864 Esperence male child b. 16/01/1868 Esperence Ellen Briget b. 31/01/1872 Hobart 02/07/1879: Charged at Esperence with having left wife & children, without means of support. Ordered to maintain children. 30/06/1881: Charged with having left wife & children, without means of support. Ordered to maintain children. Wife Margaret died 10/11/1893 at New Town. Married 2nd wife: Annie Hazlewood 06/02/1894, St. Josephs Church, Hobart. (ref. 243/1894-37) Thomas recorded as 64yrs of age, widower, labourer. Annie - 54yrs, widow, housekeeper. Annie died 1898. Several of his children were in trouble with the law and vagrant (often left neglected). Thomas Virgoe died 1910 at Launceston, Tasmania.
