A Maria Wade is mentioned in William Ross's The Fell Tyrant, or the Suffering Convict, a highly critical and perhaps exaggerated account of conditions at the Moreton Bay penal settlement under the commandant Captain Patrick Logan (London, 1836). Ross says an illicit bar of soap was found in Wade's hut and, despite her protestations of innocence, Logan extended her sentence by six months, whereupon the indignant Wade told him: "I pray to God that I may see your wife a widow, and your children fatherless before I quit the settlement." Ross further reports that Logan's widow, on being told of the death of her husband (in itself an interesting tale), declared: "Oh! wretched Maria, your prayers have indeed been heard."

It appeared that the robbery had been effected in the night-time, and that the articles stolen must have been drawn through a window which had been broken open. To a penal settlement for 3 years.
