William applied for his wife Ann and 3 children to have free passage to Australia since 1833. He applied again in 1843, a note on his application stated "It is understood to be Sir James Graham's desire that the practice of providing free passages to Australia for the wives and families of convicts should be abolished" - they finally arrived on the 'William Jardine' as emigrants in 1849.
