The Convict Indentures state that James Walsh was 65 years old. He could read and write; religion Protestant; status married with 4 sons and 5 daughters and a native of County Limerick. He was a labourer and dairyman (no code combined occupation code for this.). James was convicted of sheep stealing on 10 July 1837 at Limerick and sentenced to life. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 4 inches; complexion sallow; hair brown mixed with grey and eyes hazel. Transport number 38. Prisoner number 38-38. Queanbeyan Applications Volume 4/5651 was assigned in i) Queanbeyan and district (before 1847) and ii)received a ticket of leave passport to Gipps Land [Victoria] in 1847. Received ticket of leave on 6 September 1847 (number 47/676) and allowed to remain in Queanbeyan and District NSW. Received ticket of leave passport on 10 September 1847 (number 47/617) and allowed to proceed to Gipps Land in the service of Alexander McLeod for 12 months. The Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan states that Alexander and his wife Christine nee McKinnon were from Strath, Inverness, Scotland and had arrived in Australia on 27 October 1837 with two children on the William Nicol. They had resided at Palmerville near Queanbeyan, NSW. As land was explored further south and developed a number of people moved south seeking better opportunities.
