At Waterford Assizes, on Saturday, Martin Walsh was found guilty of stealing 23£ from his master, Henry Boyce Harvey, Esq. an officer of the 73d Regiment; he was sentenced to transportation for seven years Limerick Chronicle, 11 Aug 1827. Martin Walsh was tried for stealing, on the 7th of July, 25£. from his master, Henry Boyce Harvey, Esq., an officer in the 73d Regiment. Henry Boyce Harvey, Esq. sworn—Went to breakfast that morning at eleven o'clock with Mr. Seymour. Left prisoner in charge of his room. Left 25£ in his desk. Returned in on hour and a quarter, and found prisoner gone and the door locked. Went away for another half-hour; returned again ; door still locked. Being under the necessity of getting some articles out, he had the door broken open. Examined his desk, and found the money gone as well as the servant. Had counted the money before breakfast. Saw his servant in custody that evening in the guard-house. The key has not been found since. Sergeant-Major Ashenden sworn—Sent men in search of prisoner when he absconded. Was not present when he was retaken, but saw him afterwards in the guard-house and conversed with him. Neither hope nor fear was held out, and prisoner, when asked where the missing money was, said that if a corporal was sent with him to a house in town, he would get Mr. Harvey all his money except about ten shillings. Witness went himself with prisoner. Outside the barracks met Surgeon Martin, and prisoner said that if Mr. Martin would take him to a private room, he would give up the money. They took prisoner to the orderly room, and he then gave him 17£ 10s. The prisoner was found Guilty, and sentenced to seven years' transportation. Morning Herald, 10 Aug 1827.
