ROBERT WAPLES was indicted for having in his custody and possession, a certain forged promissory note, purporting to be a promissory note of the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, he well knowing it to be forged . To this indictment the prisoner pleaded GUILTY , aged 25. Transported for Fourteen Years . London Jury, before Mr. Common Serjeant. Old Bailey Online 682. He had recently lost one sloop "Betsy" and stated his health was not good. 19/9/1822 on a list of prisoners transported to Port Macquarie on the Lady Nelson New South Wales, Australia, Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788-1856 Petitions To The Governor From Convicts For Mitigations of Sentences 4/2/1823 Robert had a ToL for 5 years by 1823 when in August of 1822 he was arrested and convicted of drunkeness and sentenced to 2 years at Port Macquarie. The petition states he married a respectable widow (she had been living here for 32 years and came free) just after he arrived and had built up a great deal of property and possessions. He had a large house at 95 Pitt Street Sydney, farm land, cattle, two vessels at sea and other possessions. The petition maintained that his wife was not capable of running his business and had been losing a considerable sum during his incarceration.
