Anne (officially Harriet) had taken in 40 shillings worth of ribbon in Liverpool stolen by Euphemia (Effy) McDonald and another man from Mrs Newby's shop. Both received death sentences, later commuted to 14 years transportation. Anne was from Manchester and was described as 4ft 10 tall, with a fair complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. She travelled to New South Wales along with her seven year old son Thomas. Anne was sent to the female factory on arrival like all women who arrived with children. She initially applied to marry a James Martin (ship- Chapman) in June 1820 but no marriage took place. The following year, she married free convict Timothy Ballard (ship- Duke of Portland), a wood sawyer in June 1821 at St Johns Parramatta. They went on to have seven children. The family can be seen on the 1825 census, including with her oldest son Thomas and twins- also Thomas(!) and Mary. By 1828, the family was still at Parramatta. Anne was given her certificate of freedom in 1832. In 1844, Ann, who seems to use Harriet as her given name from this point on, and her daughters were involved in a contested land dispute resulting in her daughter Martha taking an axe and with Harriet's (who was now described as old and being blind) encouragement, repeatedly hacking down a fence put up by a Mr Hillas on land they both claimed. The case was dismissed. In 1845, Harriet was jailed for 24 hours for being drunk. In 1847, Harriet was widowed when her husband Timothy passed away. Anne (as Harriet) died from pneumonia on the 2nd October 1850, aged about 58. She had been ill for some time with a chest infection after catching a cold and despite attempts from her daughters, the doctor would not come and see her as he had been paid much more to visit another patient. An inquest was held, recording her death from natural causes. Anne (Harriet) was buried at the All Saints Cemetery, Parramatta and her name is inscribed on a commemorative wall.
