Convict Notes




Francis was a 2nd cook on the 'City of Hobart'. The ship was on a passage to Sydney when a gale hit on November 17th 1866. Francis was on the deck with provisions when the vessel lurched and he was thrown over the rail. Article located in the Mercury Newspaper dated 26th November 1866.




Francis was 24 years old and was transported for "Stealing Hair". He was at Norfolk Island for the first 2 years and arrived in VDL in May 1847 per "Tory". Francis was 5'6" tall, single, illiterate, protestant, fresh complexion, light grey eyes, light brown hair, small lump on back of left hand and a scar on each hip. 23/4/1850: TOL 21/6/1853: CP 6/7/1853: Married Sarah Neale/Neal, the daughter of convict James Neal and Susannah Finch Richards. Sarah was born in the colony in 1833 and died in Hobart on 19/11/1914 aged 81. Sarah and Francis had 6 children and after Francis died Sarah married Robert England Woodhall in 1883.
