This day, the following prisoners, sentenced at the Assizes, were transmitted under an escort of the 37th Regiment, to the Hulk Surprise at Cove:— Edward Carroll, for Rape; James Blake, Horse stealing; William Daly, Larceny ; Martin Ryan, same; John Connors, Pig stealing Michael Mara, Thomas Hayes, John Ward, Patrick Callaghan, Mathew Callaghan, and Jeremiah Sullivan, all for Larceny ; Denis Gorman, Pig stealing.  Limerick Evening Post, 6 May 1828.

The Indentures state that John Ward was 33 years old. He could read and write; religion Protestant; status married with no children and is a native of Limerick. He was a groom and carman. He was convicted of stealing bed linen on 15 March 1828 at Limerick and sentenced to 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 5 inches; complexion ruddy; hair dark brown and eyes hazel. Transport number 173. Assigned to Mr ? Warren William, Hunter's River. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1835 (number 35/504)
