Warwickshire assizes ATTACK on Mr. DUGDALE'S GAMEKEEPERS. Joseph alias Warren (aged 23), William Ireland (28), John Mogford, Thos. Darlistone (23), William Goldby (26), John Mellor (25), John Squelch (29), John White (36), Henry White (25), David White (1?)), and James White (27), four brothers, were arraigned on an indictment, charging the first-named prisoner with having, on the night the 19th December last, at Merevale, feloniously and maliciously fired at Robert Hood and three others, gamekeepers of D. S. Dugdale, Esq., with with intent kill and murder them; and the other ten prisoners with aiding and abetting the said Joseph Warren. second indictment charged the prisoners with the misdemeanor of being found armed at night, for the purpose of destroying game and a third, with stealing poultry, the same night, from the premises of Mr. Alcock, at Mancetter. Joseph White, another of the same family the four four prisoners of that name, was also charged with the above offences, but has eluded apprehension; and Joseph Cross, an accomplice, was admitted King's evidence. The prisoners, who were eleven remarkably powerful, active, young men, were tried on the capital charge; ... Death information - died from falling out of a 'cart' on the Rydalmere Road travelling from Gladesville towards Parramatta past the Hospital for the Insane grounds. His son Thomas Warren was driving the horse. This was reported in the Cumberland Argus and Fruit Growers Advocate Newspaper on Saturday 8 Feb 1890, page 4 and is available for free access at the Trove website.




Joseph married Lydia Cooke (Neal) in Warwickshire in 1883. He was Transported in 1829 on the Layton to NSW. He married Sarah Jane Hessell in 1842,she died in 1853, he remarried: Mary Ann Thrasher in 1854. he had about 18 children.He died in 6/2/1890 in Sydney,from his injuries after falling from a motor vehicle. He is buried at Mays Hill Cemetery at Parramatta, NSW Australia.




Joseph Warren was born in Warwickshire, England in 1805, he was convicted on the charge of 'Shooting to murder", a gamekeeper on the Dugdale estate when he entered the land with the 3 White brothers to steal some pheasants. Joseph left behind a wife Lydia Cooke & 3 children. He remarried with the Governors consent, Sarah Jane Hessell & had 6 more children, she died & he remarried Mary Ann Thrasher & had 9 children. He owned a butcher shop in Canterbury, NSW. He died when he fell out of a car onto the road in Parramatta. He is buried at Mays Hill Cemetary, Parramatta NSW with some other family members.
