1832: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as 25 and a blacksmith, having been transported for stealing a flock bed. His Conduct Records shows he had two previous convictions - one for stealing timber and the other for stealing beef. He was described as "well connected" on the voyage, and was single (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p60). 1837: He was granted a Ticket of Leave, lost it for 6 months for a misdemeanour and had it restored on 31 October that year (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-46$init=CON31-1-46p169).
CRIME: James WATHEN was convicted at Gloucester on 3 January 1832 for stealing a bed and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. He was admitted to the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich on 21 January 1832. He was sent from the hulk on 11 February for transportation. James WATHEN was 23, born 1809, according to the hulk record (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
