George WATKINS was convicted at Usk, Monmouth, Wales on 4 Jan 1841 for stealing a hat and a pair of boots. Gaol Report: "very bad connections and involved in an attempted mutiny in prison". Had previously been in prison for stealing and asault. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Susan' arriving 24 July 1842. Married man, widower. Farm labourer. Aged 32 yrs. 5'4 1/4" height. Stout build. Tattoos. Fresh complexion; dk brown hair. Native place of birth: near Monmouth, Wales. Mother: Esther (ref. Convict Indent record) Brother: William " " " Sister: Mary " " " VDL: Ten months Probation Period. 1843 at Pontville: Assaulting a person. Discharged. 29 Jan 1846: Ticket of Leave granted. 1847 at Pontville: Drunk. Fined. 13 Sept 1849: Certificate of Freedom issued. 14 March 1864: at Launceston,Tas. Disorderly.3 mths imprisonment with hard labour. (There is a marriage permission for a George Watkins, per Susan to marry Anne Kelly per Mary Ann, but research needed to sift through all the voyages of the 'Susan' to see if this person.)
