THE TRIAL ON 25 FEBRUARY, 1828: It was alleged that on 7 January, 1828, James Stanmore Watkins (1) stole a wooden safe, four haddocks and a cod fish from the back of a property at Bellfield belonging to Captain William Marshall; (2) stole a gardener's spade from the same property; and (3) broke into one of the houses on a property situated on Melville Street, Portobello, and stole a number of items of clothing. He pleaded not guilty. He was found guilty of the first and second charges, and sentenced to transportation for 14 years (see National Records of Scotland; Reference JC26/1828/447).

James Stanmore WATKINS was convicted at Edinburgh, Scotland on 25 Feb 1828 for housebreaking. Gaol report: "character & connections bad. Former course of life irregular". 14 yr transportation sentence. Hulk Report: "orderly'. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Manlius' 1828. Recorded as a single man BUT had 2 children, he had left at the West Port Poor House. He had last worked in Edinburgh. Aged 52yrs; plasterer; dark complexion; grey hair; Hazel eyes; slightly lame, gun shot wound. Native place of birth given as Abingdon, Berks. Colony of VDL: Assigned to public works. 1830: Charged with stealing 1 bag of lime. Dismissed. 1831: Being out an an improper hour. 1 mth imprisonment, with hard labour. 1832: Being out at night. 6 weeks imprisonment, with hard labour. Passholder status granted.
