Convict Notes

Benjamin Watson had received a sentence of death for his burglay at Uttoxeter. 29 of the prisoners who had capital offences received this sentence. The regional newspaper reported that most of them were shortly after reprieved, EXCEPT for seven prisoners who were left to be hanged on Saturday 16 August. Benjamin Watson was one of these. However, obviously he was reprieved too, and so were Thomas Lewis and Edward Hughes who were also on the list of seven. All three men arrived in NSW on "Neptune" (Northampton Mercury, Saturday August 9, 1817)
