Charles Watson was placed in charge of convict gangs which were responsible for building 5 of the first 7 lighthouses in Tasmania. They were the Lighthouses on Deal Island, Swan Island, Goose Island, Cape Bruny and Low Head. He was granted a conditional pardon after serving 7 years, but it was never made unconditional and he died a sick and broken man and was buried in the convict section of the Launceston Hospital cemetery.
Charles Watson was my 3 x Great Grandfather. At his arrest he was described as the Manager of a Steam Engine and a Draftsman. He is credited with overseeing the construction by convict labour, of 5 of the first 7 Lighthouses in Tasmania. Namely at Deal Island, Swan Island, Goose Island, Low Head and Bruny Island. He is mentioned in the book "From Dusk Till Dawn" about Lighthouses in Tasmania.
