Bedford. Tuesday last, the following seven prisoners were removed from the County Gaol to the Hulks, sentence of death having been recorded against them at the last Assizes, which has been commuted to transportation for their natural lives, viz. Thomas Burrett, John Burrett, John Hodgins, James Robinson, Charles Davis, James Watson, Geo. Hide, and John Stratten. Huntingdon, Bedford and Peterborough Gazette, 26 April 1828. National Archives. Bedford assizes. Atrocious Burglary.— John Lincoln, aged 19, George Hide, aged 17, and James Watson, aged 17, were arraigned for breaking into the house William Brace, a labourer, of Southill, and stealing 7£ 9s. John Lincoln pleaded guilty, Hide and Watson were put upon their trial. — Mr. Payne stated the case to the jury —The prosecutor, an aged man residing alone deposed to having his door broken open about midnight of 26th Oct., and three men entering his sleeping room, violently beat him and then broke open his box, and took the money as charged in the indictment.—George Burrows, an accomplice was admitted in evidence, and fully proved that the prisoners assisted him (the witness) and Lincoln in breaking open the house and taking the money, which they the next morning divided; the robbers left two whitethorn bludgeons the old man's bed room. The confession of Watson was put and read. After most impartial summing up the judge, the jury returned a verdict guilty, but recommended Watson, in consequence of the good character given him, to mercy he learned judge immediately proceeded to pass, upon all the three prisoners, Lincoln, Watson and Hide, the awful sentence of Death, leaving hopes of their lives being spared Huntingdon, Bedford and Peterborough Gazette, 8 March 1828.
