Convict Notes
Mary Ann Mahony was indicted for stealing 15 Bank notes value 30s each; 4 sovereigns, 1 guinea, and 3 half crowns, the property of Dr. H. Baldwin, on the 8th March—a servant Dr. H’s., Mary Watts, being out of a message, met the prisoner, who five weeks before had been in Dr. Baldwin’s service, she kissed her Mary Watts and said she was going see her; she prevailed on her to go into public house where site treated her to two glasses of white wine and then asked her to allow her to sleep with her that night, to which the witness replied that it was not the first time. She (witness) then took her home with her, dinner was sent up, and she was desired put coals on the drawing-room fire she left the prisoner outside the door, but on her return to the kitchen was surprised not to see her. She then went stairs look for her, and seeing light her master’s room, went in and saw her standing at the secretary ; and her asking what she wanted there? prisoner said it was salts; she then went with her into another room, where the prisoner took out 4 sovereigns and 1 guinea from her pocket, desired her say nothing about it, and she would give her half. They then came down to the hall, and Dr. Baldwin was called out ; ...... . Cork Constitution, 22 March 1832. Trial of Mary Watts - In the report of the trial of this woman for having stolen property from the house of Dr. Baldwin, the name of a witness, Mary Ann Mahony, had accidently been substituted for that of the culprit, Mary Watts, who had been found guilty of the theft. Southern Reporter, 31 March 1832.
