Convict Notes

Baptised on 30/08/1807 at Holy Trinity, Berwick as son of Elias & Isabella Weatherburnand and the register also showed his d.o.b. as 06/08/1807. According to the Freemens' records, he was serving in the Royal Artillery when he was admitted as a Freeman of Berwick upon Tweed on 13/10/1828. In subsequent years, the Freemen's records subsequently showed him as being 'Abroad', 'Australia' and 'New Zealand'. He must have returned to the UK on conclusion of his sentence and was a passenger, Shoemaker, on the migrant ship Philip Laing which sailed on 27/11/1847 from Greenock to Port Chalmers, NZ. Between 1851 & 1878, he was shown on various lists of Dunedin Electors & Jurors, initially as a Shoemaker and eventually as a Tidewaiter. He married Mary Murray on 02/07/1856 at Dunedin and they raised three children. He retired as a Tidewaiter at Dunedin in March 1868 and died at his home in Queens Drive, Musselburgh, Otago on 31/05/1881. His death certificate showed him as aged 74yrs and that he had been born at Berwick. From NZ Internal Affairs Dept. records, his marriage, the births of his three children and deaths of his wife, Mary, in 1880 and William in 1881 are the only recorded NZ BMDs for Weatherburns in the 19th century.
