Surrey Winter Assizes. Kingston. Jan 1. These Assizes ended yesterday evening, when sentence of death was passed upon the following convicts : … Eliza Webb, only 16 years of age, for uttering forged notes at Croydon; Two convicts are left for execution, viz. Eliza Webb, for passing forged notes upon the Brighton and Sussex Bank: … Baldwin’s London Weekly Journal, 11 Jan 1823. THE CASE OF ELIZA WEBB. It will be recollected by our readers that we gave an account of the trial of the unfortunate girl at the last Kingston Assizes, for uttering forged notes of the Brighton and Sussex bank to many shopkeepers at Croydon of which she was convicted, and received sentence of death. Since her condemnation she evinced no sense of her awful situation, which can only be accounted for from her extreme youth, not having attained her 16th year. The unfortunate girl is of low parents, and was born near Mitcham, in Surrey, where the gang to which she was attached, and that her ignominy, had induced her to join them. The Proprietors of the Bank have, in a most praiseworthy manner, interceded in the proper quarter for a commutation of her awful punishment ; and a few days since the gentlemen had an interview with the culprit in the condemned cell at Hlorsemonger-lane, to whom she confessed the names of the whole of her associates. Yesterday forenoon Mr. Walters, the Governor of the prison, received a reprieve for the unfortunate young woman, and she was instantly removed from the cell and placed amongst those convicts that are under orders for botany Bay for life.
