Convict Notes

Committed, to Fisherton Gaol:—George Webb, charged with having committed abominable offence at Westbury; Salisbury Journal, 28 Jan 1839. Wilts Lent Assizes. George Webb, 18 years of age, who could neither read nor write, was charged on the oath of Wm. Blatchment and others, with having committed an unnatural offence at Westbury, in the broad light of day, on the 22nd of January last. The prisoner was convicted on the clearest testimony: he said, in his defence, that Marchment had same spite against him, in consequence of his having told the gamekeeper of his having shot some birds. Marchment said he knew nothing of the circumstance—it was entirely false. The Jury returned verdict of Guilty. The Judge passed sentence of death on him, but intimated that his life would be spared, and that he would be transported for life to one of the penal colonies. Wiltshire independent. 14 March 1839. Salisbury Assizes. Sentences of the prisoners, continued from the preceding page :— Death.—George Webb, a capital offence at Westbury (reprieved). Salisbury Journal, 11 March 1839. The following convicts have been removed from Fisherton Gaol during the week, and put on board the York Hulk, at Gosport: George Webb, Isaac Batchelor, John Whitbread, Isaac Boulter, Henry Maslen, and Elijah Cross. Devizes Gazette, 9 May 1839.
