James Webb was convicted of larceny (knowingly in receipt of stolen goods) at the Central Criminal Court in London (The Old Bailey) on April 8th 1850, and given 7 years transportation. In the Court transcripts, James' age is recorded as 29 (so born n 1821). James was initially incarcerated at Newgate Prison and was subsequently transferred to Pentonville Prison on May 9th 1850 - where his age is also recorded as 29, and occupation was Brushmaker. On being transported to the Swan River Colony on the "Dudbrook" he is listed as 20 years of age and his occupation is recorded as a Locksmith. Following 3 years in Western Australia he was given a Conditional Pardon in July 1855. From 1860 to 1880 James worked as a Carrier on the Mail Coach run from Perth to Albany and vv. James Webb married Catherine Wilson in 1859, and they were to have 6 children (Elizabeth Mary, Caroline Sophia, Edward James, Martha, Magdelena Mary and Gerald). James died on 27th August 1884 and his age is recorded as 59 .... No Inquest was held into his death as he had been on the lash for several months (2 Court appearances for being drunk & disorderly) and he was found comatose at the Horse & Groom Hotel on Goderich Street. He died later at his home in Howick Street. His death was recorded as heart disease. As there are several conflicting ages / dates of birth for James, I have deferred to that recorded by the Central Criminal Court in London. James Webb is buried in an unmarked burial plot at East Perth Cemetery.
