Convict Notes
24 Oct 1843: Colonial Times newspaper, Hobart - list of apprentices available for work, from Campbell St. Hobart - Angus WEIR, aged 15 yrs, sawyer.
It appears that this Angus WEIR was one of the 'Parkhurst' boys, i.e. youths sent from Britain under a reform scheme to remove them from a situation of crime, skill them and then apprentice them out, in the Colonies. Angus is listed on the 'Mandarin' in 1843 aged 12 yrs. He had been charged with housebreaking, at Edinburgh. Noted on record that he was apprenticed out upon arrival in VDL. There is a recorded 'Departure' from Van Diemen's Land for an Angus WEIR in 1846 on the ship 'Lord Hobart' leaving for Two Fold Bay, New Zealand. (ref. CU 36/1/343). (Weir was a fairly uncommon name at that time so further research would reveal if this is the correct person.)
Angus Weir was convicted at Edinburgh, Scotland on 10 June 1840. 7yr transportation sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the ship 'Mandarin' 1843. There are no other details at all on his Conduct Record but his name and offence record.
