William Wellard was “5 feet 3 & ½ inches tall, of dark complexion with brown eyes & dark receding hair.” When convicted he used his wife’s maiden name of Peters as an alias and he served his time in NSW as a convict under the name William Peters. When he attained his freedom William then reverted to using his proper surname. The “Marquis of Hastings” departed Portsmouth on the 18/4/1827 with 168 male convicts, arriving at Port Jackson on the 31/7/1827. William was placed in the services of James Roberts of Baulkham Hills. In 1832 William was joined by his wife and two of their surviving children, Sarah age 16 and William age 14. Mary Wellard arrived at Port Jackson on 20 May 1832 on the ship "Burrell" under a convict reunification scheme. After serving 9 years of his sentence, William was granted his Ticket of Leave on 8/3/1836 and and then on 30/7/1847 he received a Conditional Pardon. William and Mary stayed on in NSW making a new life for themselves and their family.
