GEORGE WELLBANK was indicted for stealing, on the 8th of February , 10 yards of printed cotton, value 5s. , the goods of Edward Belton . EDWARD BELTON. I keep a draper's shop in Lisson-grove . On the 8th of February, about half-past four o'clock, I was at home, but did not see this cotton taken. MICHAEL JOHNSON . I live next door to the prosecutor; I saw the prisoner and another boy for some time opposite my window; I watched them, and saw them run; I then went out; the prisoner had got the printed cotton, and dropped it on my rails; I suspected he had stolen it - I took it up, and he was pursued and taken; the other. boy got away; I am quite sure the prisoner is the person who was running with the cotton and dropped it; he only ran into the next street. THOMAS FURSEY . I am an officer. I have the property. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence (written.) I passed the shop of the prosecutor; whilst doing so, a boy, who had taken a piece of print, threw it on the ground and ran away; a person from the shop ran after him, and I picked up the print, intending to keep it until the person who had gone in pursuit of the thief returned. GUILTY . Aged 13. - Transported for Seven Years .

Born to Joseph Wellbank and Elizabeth Russell at Hinde St., Manchester Square, Lisson Grove Middx.Convicted aged 13 in 1832 of stealing 10 yds Printed Cotton. Tried 3rd session Old Bailey 16/2/1832 and found guilty. Sentenced to 7 years transportation. Sent to Newgate Prison and then to a convict hulk "Euryalus" on Thames at Chatham, Kent. Stayed 1 year and then departed for Van Dieman's Land 27/9/1833 on the Southwork. Disembarked 14/1/1834 and taken to Port Puer reformatory across from Port Arthur. 27/10/39 boarded the brig "Brazil Packet" and Georgetown for Geelong, Port Phillip. Married Mary Anne Harford and had 3/4 girls (unsure) Rosanna 1845, Mary Ann 31/3/1849 and Emily Jane 1851 Christ Church Geelong. In 1852 he opened a Shoemaking business in Ballarat. 1868 Indecent assault on 7 year old girl at Ballarat Cricket Ground. Found guilty and sentenced to 3 months hard labour. Wife disappeared after this and he was estranged from his 3 daughters. Married widow Keziah Chandler saying he was a bachelor (even though 2 daughters were still living in Ballarat) 22/8/1885. 15/12/1891 died of renal failure and was buried with Keziah who had died the year before at Ballarat New Cemetery.
