older brother of Robert Welling; who was also convicted at the same time and transported together on the General Stewart arriving in Sydney in Dec 1818 and dispatched to Liverpool for allocation. Note originally both brothers were sentenced to death but this sentence was commuted to tranportation on mercy grounds.




Intercolonial correspondence found at NSW State records(Kingswood) dated October 1827. Referred to as "John Welling"per Gebenal Stewart




Recently discovered a letter held at NSW State Archives(Kingswood) between VDL Colonial Secretry's office written to Alexander McClay,NSW Colonial Sec, dated 6 Oct 1827 requesting particulars of the sentence for 2 men: (item no 4/1952 27/10116) "John Whaling"per General Stewart;and "Matthew McHugh" per Surrey. It was "answered on 27 Oct 1827 with following info: John WElling p Gen'l Stuart tried at Surryabt 30 March 1818. 14 years.. Matthew McCue Surry (2), tried at Kilkenny Co March 1826. Sentenance - Life...holds a ticket of Leave No 382/1981 dated 24 May 1819. John Welling: Native place London Calling: Labourer Age: 32 Height: 5 feet 1 1/2 inches Compelection: Dark sallow Hair: Dark brown Eyes: Dark remarks :........ Matthew McCue" Native place: Fermanagh Trade: Groom & Servant Age: 36 Height: 5 feet 21/2 inches Complexion: Dark freckled Hair:Black Eyes: Black Remarks:........




Listed as Whaling on his conduct record in VDL. Arrived VDL 1821 per 'Prince Leopold" 26 years old on arrival, brown hair, hazel eyes, woman on left arm. 1830: TOL 29/5/1832: Free Certificate 11/10/1832: Hobart QS, 7 years imprisonment with hard labour for carnally know a girl between 10 and 12 years old. 1833: Transported to Port Arthur 1835: Assigned to D Murray 1837: Sent to Oatlands for further assignment.




On list of convicts disembarked from the "General Stuart" & forwarded to Liverpool for distribution Source: Colonial Sec papers)Cannot yet find him after that date although Colonial Times(Hobart, Ta, Weds 4 April 1832, page 4 mentions that he( JOhn Welling, General Stewart, is eligible to apply for a Certificate of Freedom as the period for which he was transported was expiring was expiring on 30th April 1832. So presumably he was still alive at that date
