Family connections for James (Wells) are: WELLS James (Wells), son of James (Wells) & Sarah (Wood) was born about 1801 at Brithelmstone (now Brighton?) Essex. He worked as a sawyer for General Sir George (Osborn) 4th Baronet of Chicksands Priory Bedfordshire, where his father also worked. He was tried for highway robbery at Chelmsford Essex Assizes on 27 3 1816, sentenced to Life, held on hulk PERSEUS in Portsmouth Harbour from 27 3 1816 & arrived in NSW as a convict on 8 3 1817 after a voyage of 5months on FAME. He was issued his Ticket of Leave no.4/4420 & recommended for Conditional Pardon no.42/327. He married Mary (???/Shaw) on 24 3 1823 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He obtained permission to marry, perhaps secondly, Mary Ann (Morley nee Williams) on 22 4 1835 & did so on 18 7 1835 at Christ Church Newcastle. [Some details taken from this Website] Mary (???/Shaw) may have been the person born in 1791 who was tried for possessing forged notes at probably Old Bailey on 1 4 1818, sentenced to 14years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW on 7 9 1818 after a voyage of 4months on MARIA. Did she work for Mr J (Oxley) at Emu Plains in 1822?- she seems to have been the wife of Thomas (Shaw) at this time. She died in 1827 age about36. (Noted a Mary (Wells from MARY ANN) is recorded as dying on 30 8 1827 age32 & buried at St James CofE Sydney. [Some details taken from this Website] Noted a James (Wells) had a relationship with Ann (Clark/Cleark) & produced 2children: 1.William (Wells) was born on 17 6 1818 & baptised on 3 8 1818 at Christ Church Newcastle. 2.Margarette (Wells) was born on 10 5 1820 & baptised on 26 6 1820 at St Johns Launceston. He married Ann Morley (nee Williams) at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle, on 18th July 1835; he aged 37, she aged 40.Witnesses at marriage William and Mary Ann Cooper.
Son of James & Sarah Wells (nee Woods) he was employed as a Sawyer for 4 years & 3 months by Gen. Sir George Osborn, 4th Baronet of Chicksands Priory, Bedfordshire; only leaving because he outworked himself. (Source: Affadivit dated 30th April 1816 by his father (James Wells) of Shefford, Beds., also employed at Chicksands.)
