In 1800, Mary Welch, alias Murphy was 24 years old and a servant at the White Swan pub in Wapping-Wall, London. She worked at the public house for only four weeks before she was charged with stealing a considerable amount of silver from the owner of the dwelling house. Mary maintained her innocence of course but was nevertheless convicted, and transported to Australia for 7 years. Mary arrived at Sydney in 1801 on the Nile. In 1806 she had a Ticket of Leave and lived with Greg Doran, who was a wheelwright. In the population muster of 1814 she was recorded as living with Bryan Spalding and four children, none of whom were dependent on government stores. Her last child, Catherine, is the daughter of Bryan Spalding who arrived in the colony from Ireland on the Brittania in May, 1797. Mary (Welch) Spalding passed away in 1838 at New South Wales, Australia.
