Dorothy WETTON was convicted at Nottingham, England on 29 June 1840 for stealing stockings, which were found. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Navarion' arriving 17 Jan 1841. Widow, 4 children; aged 44 yrs; house servant; 4' 11" height. Residence: Derbyshire, England. (No recording of her children accompanying her on the voyage or being placed in the Orphanage nr Hobart, although not conclusive as there could be variations in the spelling of the surname.) VDL: Assigned to work services. Clear Conduct Record. Ticket of Leave granted 16 Feb 1844. Free by Servitude 29 June 1847. Free Certificate issued 21 Sept 1847. Application for permission to marry: 2 Feb 1842 - to John HUTCHINS (transported per 'Medina'). Approved. Marriage: 4 April 1842 - Dorothy WETTON aged 45 yrs, widow laundress to John HUTCHNS aged 33 yrs,labourer, bachelor at Church of England, Avoca, VDL. (ref. 37/1/2 no. 1412) Departure from Van Diemen's Land: 2 Sept 1852 left Launceston for Melbourne, Victoria. Steerage passenger on the 'Alice'. Noted that she was "free by servitude", ship to Colony "Navarino". (ref. POL220/1/2)
