A weaver, living in the woodlands near Frome, Somerset. He was convicted of being an accomplice before the fact of wilfully shooting and discharging a gun loaded with powerd and shot or slugs against the person of William Blacker with intent to murder him. Blacker was gamekeeper to the Earl of Cork so the offence was possibly a poaching expedition. He was tried before Sir Robert Graham kt. at the Lent Assizes at Taunton on 30 March 1816 and sentanced to death. Reprieved, he was sentanced to 14 years transportation and delvered on board the Justitia Prison Hulk on the River Thames.. His original name was Ayres and the baptisms of his children at Frome are recordered in that name.
