1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

The Convict Indentures state that James Whelan was 32 years old. He could neither read nor write: religion Roman Catholic; status married with one son and a native of County Tipperary. He was a farm servant. James was convicted of perjury at Tipperary on 4 August 1835 and sentenced to 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: height 5 feet 5 1/2 inches; complexion ruddy; hair brown and eyes hazel. Comment on indentures that he had carroty whiskers. Transport number 156. Prisoner number 36-1959. NSW 1837 General Muster states that James Whelan was assigned to I) Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney and ii) Mr R. Woo..., Illawarra. (Writing is faint.) Received ticket of leave on 8 October 1840 (number 40/2104) in the District of Illawarra. Comment on ticket of leave states that pass paid for 7 March 1845 for Bathurst, NSW. Received Certificate of Freedom on 1 September 1842 (number 42/1522).
