Michael Whelan was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 9th Jan 1836 and arriving 17th May 1836 with 108 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

1835, 17 July: Michael WHELAN was tried at Limerick for stealing clothes (see http://members.pcug.org.au/ and New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891; Convicts Deaths; Annual Returns of Convicts Who Died, 1867-1891). 1868, 19 October: Michael WHELAN per Surrey 1836, stealing, 7 years, is on a list of so-called "British Lunatics" in the "Parramatta Lunatic Asylum" (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891). 1875, 24 May: Michael WHELAN died on this day (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891; Convicts Deaths; Annual Returns of Convicts Who Died, 1867-1891).
