IN VDL: 1817: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as "Joseph Whitaker", 5'8½" tall with a light complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair, 29 years old, and a labourer whose native place was Nottinghamshire (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON23-1-3$init=CON23-1-3-p117j2k). 6/11/1817: He was charged with attempting to carnally know a child under 9 years of age, for which he received 200 lashes (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-45$init=CON31-1-45p5). 13/3/1819: For breaking out of jail and stealing various articles of apparel he received 100 lashes and was transported to Newcastle on June 3 for 3 years (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON23-1-3$init=CON23-1-3-p117j2k).

IN NSW: 9/8/1817 - James Whitaker was sent from NSW to VDL per the brig Jupiter with 69 men from the convict transport Chapman. He was selected to replace one of the original Chapman transportees, George McMullen, who died after being struck by lightning on board the Jupiter on August 7. --0--

IN IRELAND: July 1816: James Whitaker was tried at Kildare for robbery, convicted and sentenced to 7 years' transportation (New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1790-1849; 1817). 23/12/1816: James Whitaker was admitted to Kilmainham Jail in Dublin to await transportation. He was listed as prisoner #3034, "a convict from the County of Kildare". 18/1/1817: He was discharged to be "sent aboard the convict ship" (Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910). In 1817, he was listed as 25 years old (New South Wales, Australia Convict Ship Muster Rolls and Related Records, 1790-1849; 1817). --0--

James Whitaker was convicted at Co. Kildare in July 1816. 7yr sentence. Transported on the ship 'Pilot' to New South Wales, Australia and then transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Jupiter', arriving there 23/08/1817. Aged 29yrs (born abt 1787) Nottingham 1817 - 1819 assignments in V.D.L. 1819 transferred to Newcastle, NSW, for 3yrs.
