Robert Whitaker/Whittaker and 5 co-accused were poaching some pheasants at a wood which was owned by John Stracey Esq., there were 2 watchmen and the gamekeeper on the grounds and the two groups clashed, shots were fired and William Everett, one of the watchmen was shot and injured. Robert received a death sentence commuted to transportation for life. Colonial Secretary Papers: WHITTAKER, Robert. Per "Mangles", 1824 1824 Oct 30: On list of convicts landed from the "Mangles" & forwarded to Airds for distribution (Reel 6013; 4/3512 p.647) 1836: TOL Bathurst 9/4/1842: TOL Passport, Bathurst Bench. 1/5/1843: CP 1843: Married his first wife, after she died - 1848: Married Ellen Hayes, aged 15, and had 13 children – not known if all were with Ellen. 1875: Robert died at Bathurst – parents listed as William and Sarah.
