About 1837: Denis White went to Maitland around this time (see court case in 1862, below). 1855, 31 October: A report in the Maitland Mercury, p3: “DRUNKENNESS - On Friday Denis White and Mary Ann Dawson pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, before the bench, at West Maitland. The former was fined 10s or 24 hours in the cells, the latter 20s or 48 hours in the cells.” (Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, Wed 31 Oct 1855, p3) 1862, 16 May: Report in The Monitor, extract as follows: “MOFFAT V. WHITE. This was an action [by Mr Moffatt] to recover £55 10s., namely, £10 10s. for each of three attendances in the Police court, to defend defendant's wife [Sarah McGee] on a charge of keeping a brothel, and for £3 paid on account of the wife, and the rest for expenses attending her trial at the Quarter Sessions [on 31 July 1858]. Defendant pleaded, except as to £12, never indebted, which £12 he had already paid. A third plea was, that no signed bill was delivered within one calendar month of the issuing of the writ of action… Denis White, the defendant, a feeble labourer, 84 years of age, deposed that he had lived in Maitland twenty five years. For twelve years past his wife would live in Sydney, but he went backwards and forwards to see her... After a short consideration, the jury found a verdict for the plaintiff for £15 15s., less £5 he had received, being at the rate of £5 5s. a day.” [Mrs White had been convicted of keeping a brothel, and was sentenced to 12 months’ jail and fined £50.] (The Monitor, 16 May 1862, p5: Banco Court)
