Convict Notes

26 Jan 1850 Died on voyage – phthisis confimata - old term for tuberculosis or other disease of lungs. “Jan 26th This man while passing round in rotation while taking lime juice and wine, with the other convicts, was perceived by me to be looking ill. On interrogating him on the subject, he said that he was not well, that he felt a deep-seated pain in chest, and had been in hospital for pectoral affection, and nothing further could be elicitated [sic] from him, being a heavy, dull, morose turn of mind, a labourer (daily) by occupation. … Jan 28th Expired suddenly at 2 of a.m. Was dead before my arrival in Hospital. Hill Dring’s [another convict] statement of the deceased, (a fellow Prisoner): Was at the Warrior Hulk at Woolwich, in the same ward as John White, nearly two years. For the last five months, White had been ailing with a bad cold attended with a cough and considerable spitting, had the cough and spitting upon him for the last 12 months. Left the Hospital Ship about five weeks before he came on board the Bangalore.”
