Warwickshire assizes ATTACK on Mr. DUGDALE'S GAMEKEEPERS. Joseph alias Warren (aged 23), William Ireland (28), John Mogford, Thos. Darlistone (23), William Goldby (26), John Mellor (25), John Squelch (29), John White (36), Henry White (25), David White (1?)), and James White (27), four brothers, were arraigned on an indictment, charging the first-named prisoner with having, on the night the 19th December last, at Merevale, feloniously and maliciously fired at Robert Hood and three others, gamekeepers of D. S. Dugdale, Esq., with with intent kill and murder them; and the other ten prisoners with aiding and abetting the said Joseph Warren. second indictment charged the prisoners with the misdemeanor of being found armed at night, for the purpose of destroying game and a third, with stealing poultry, the same night, from the premises of Mr. Alcock, at Mancetter. Joseph White, another of the same family the four four prisoners of that name, was also charged with the above offences, but has eluded apprehension; and Joseph Cross, an accomplice, was admitted King's evidence. The prisoners, who were eleven remarkably powerful, active, young men, were tried on the capital charge; ... John White was convicted along with his brothers, also travelling onboard the Layton, and also with Tom Darliston and Joseph Warren as part of the Merevale Poachers who were caught red-handed for poaching pheasants upon the Dugdale Estates at Merevale near Atherstone. This was reported in the Bedworth Echo, Dec 19th, 1991 and reports are to be found from thw=e Warwick Recorder for 13th April 1829.
