Joseph White was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 2nd Oct 1822 and arriving 4th Mar 1823 with 161 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

At our Sessions, Thursday last, holden before …… Magistrates, … Joseph White (a well known impostor, pretending to have lost an arm), was sentenced to seven years transportation, for having stolen for having stolen coat, the property of Mr Charles Curtis, which was hung out for sale at his door last fair. Immediately after the sentence was pronounced, the prisoner used the used the most opprobrious language to the Recorder, Mayor, and Magistrates. Hampshire Chronicle, 16 Sep 1822
