The Gloucestershire Quarter Sessions commenced on Tuesday, … and the following is an account of the sentences : Seven Years' Transportation —Jos. White, for stealing 4 fowls, the property of H, Gardner, of Stroud ; ... Bristol Mirror, 30 Oct 1819.
Tried and convicted at the Gloucester Quarter Sessions on 19th October 1819 for stealing at the parish of Stroud on the 6th day of September four pounds, the property of Henry Gardner, sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 23rd March 1819. Ship:- the 'Neptune I' sailed with 156 male convicts on board, there were no reported deaths during the voyage. Arrived on 16th July 1820. Assigned to his step-father, convict Elijah Lane ('Admiral Gambier' 1808), Elijah must have been quite an operator; he applied for a conditional pardon in 1817 and by the 1823/25 muster he had perhaps a dozen convicts assigned to him, while he himself employed 4 time expired convicts. He was a landholder at Richmond; in 1823/5 muster he was shown to have 300 acres, 6 horses, 30 cattle and 120 hogs. He appeared to be supplying wheat, and fresh pork and meat to the Govt Stores. He had married Joseph's mother, Ann White ('Minnstrel' 1812) in 1813. On 22nd February 1826 Joseph married Harriett Harding (daughter of convict Mary Harding, 'Grenada' 1825), at Castlereagh, On 16th November 1826 Joseph obtained his Certificate of Freedom. Joseph and Harriet went on to have 10 children between 1827-1851 and lived the rest of their lives in the Richmond area. Harriet die in 1855 at Richmond. Joseph died at Richmond on 19th June 1860.
