National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/41/79. Date. 1832 Aug; 1843 Apr.. Prisoner name: Richard White. Prisoner age: 13. Court and date of trial: Hertford Summer Assizes [Hertfordshire] 1832. Crime: Stealing victuals, a knife and a dozen brass buttons from dwelling house of Jane Bennett in Sawbridgeworth [Hertfordshire]. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Annotated: Nil. Conditional pardon 2 May 1842. Petitioner(s): Thomas Hutchinson, vicar of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire; Mrs Jane Bennett, the prosecutrix. Grounds for clemency: Although prisoner is a 'bad boy' the sentence seems disproportionate to the crime; youth of prisoner who stole for hunger as father had turned him out; good conduct as a convict. Other papers: Letter from Downing Street, reporting conditional pardon granted by Governor of New South Wales, 18 April 1843.
