26/10/1836 Derby Mercury Derbyshire, England: DERBYSHIRE OCTOBER SESSIONS. MARK STOCKS, aged 26, and FRANCIS WHITEHEAD, aged 23, were charged with stealing, in the parish of Alfredton, a purse containing five half crown pieces, and one shilling in silver, the property of William Calladine. William Calladine, was returning from Alfreton fair on the 1st of August, between ten and eleven o’clock at night, when he was stopped by three ment; one of them plaed his hand on his breast, put his hand into his breeches pocket, and took out his purse, containing five half crowns and one shilling, and then ran away. Witness pursued and followed them down a lane; he caught Whitehead and took him to the Plough Inn, and Stocks followed him. He then sent for a constable. When he came, Stocks said he would rather pay the amount than have it said they had robbed hi, and he did so, but not in the same coin as that stolen. Neither the purse nor any half crowns were found on them. Joseph England, constable, took them into custody. They neither of them offered any resistance.__Both Guilty. Transported for seven years. Mark Stocks was also on board the ‘Sarah’. Francis Whitehead was 24 years old on arrival in VDL. Native Place: Ipswich. Francis was 5'8" tall, fresh complexion, reddish hair, no whiskers, blue eyes, black patch of hair on left side of hand. Married with 2 children, Wife, Mary, at Nottingham. 17/6/1841: TOL 23/6/1843: CP 18/10/1843: COF (newspaper date). 25/3/1859 The Argus, Melbourne, Victoria: Fined 10s. for drunkenness. 17/12/1859, The Star, Ballarat, Victoria: Drunk, fined 10s. No date of death found.
