Convict Notes
At the Newcastle Assizes, William Gibson Whitfield, accused of stealing twenty-six promissory notes, each of the value of £5, and one of the value of £10, from the from the office of Mr. Davidson, of Newcastle, was, after a long trial, found guilty, and received sentence of death. The prisoner was recommended to mercy, and the Judge gave him hopes of a commutation of his sentence. Star (London), 26 August 1814.

THE undermentioned Persons have obtained Certificates, Conditional Pardons, or Tickets of Leave, during the last Week: Conditional Pardon. Baring 1, William Gibson Whitfield; Sydney Gazette, 28 Apr 1825. ------------------------------------------------- The widow of the late William Gibson Whitfield, who came by his death through a pugilistic encounter a few weeks ago, has commenced an action against the executors, to recover a part of the property willed by her husband. The claim made by the widow, rests, upon the following grounds. At the time of her marriage with Mr. Whitfield, she possessed a landed property, said to be worth between £200 and £300. Whitfield was then a prisoner of the Crown; subsequently he received an Emancipation, through the influence of a Member of the Government, but still the property of this estate was never transferred. A few weeks previously to his death, some family disagreements arose, the consequence of which was, a separation between Whitfield and his wife; the latter left Sydney and went to reside on a farm belonging to them at Hunter's River. The question is whether a female becoming married, loses the land she is possessed of at the time of marriage? by the tenour of the will left by Whitfield, he bequeaths his property exclusively to his children. The name of his widow is not once mentioned in the will. The widow has taken Counsel's opinion on the case. The death is announced of Mr. Thomas Utrick Whitfield, who was born near the corner of Elizabeth and Liverpool streets, Sydney, 1824, and lived to celebrate the 84th anniversary of his birthday. He was the second son of Mr. William Gibson Whitfield, a large land owner of early Sydney. For many years Mr. Thomas Whitfield resided in West Maitland, and more recently, he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. Irving, Darlington. Maitland Weekly Mercury, 3 Oct 1908.
