Note: Tried with Jean Whittle and Frances Whittle or Quigley. Pannel cannot write. Pannel to serve sentence in the Bridewell of Glasgow. Frances Quigley, m.s. Whittle, Verdict: Diet deserted, Verdict Comments: Diet deserted pro loco et tempore. Note: Tried with Marion McMillan and Jean Whittle. Pannel was recommitted on a new warrant. No ship found for Frances Quigley/Whittle. There is a Marion MacMillan who arrived in VDL per 'Margaret' 1843 convicted for theft. Possibly the same Marion as above. Jean/Jane Whittle was 17 years old on arrival, was literate, single, protestant, 5'2¼" tall, dark ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair and eyes, scar on outer corner of left eyebrow. 3/5/1840: Married Joseph Sewell (Lady Harewood 1832) at Newcastle, NSW., he was 33 and had a TOL - Jean was 18 and on bond. Children: 1842: Joseph - mother Jane 1844: Henry - mother Jane Joseph Sewell died 1844, listed as 34 on the NSW BDM. 30/11/1844 Maitland Mercury, NSW: -On Monday an inquest was held before Mr. Parker at Newcastle, on the body of JOSEPH SEWELL. It appeared deceased and a man named EDMOND HAYES had come into Newcastle on Saturday morning from Mr. Groves' farm, each driving a bullock dray, and after remaining some hours started on their return home about six o'clock in the evening, SEWELL being very drunk, and HAYES in liquor. They had barely got out of the town when Hayes called at a blacksmith's shop to get a barrow, and SEWELL went on. Hayes followed in a few minutes, but in the meantime SEWELL had been run over by his own dray, having apparently fallen from the dray or in attempting to get on it, his hand being much scraped. When Hayes and a person named RALPH THORNTON came up to the body SEWELL was lying across the road, unable to speak, but still alive. He was put into the dray, and Mr. LATHAM, near whose house it happened, called out to look at him : Mr. L. instantly sent for Dr. BOWKER, who promptly attended, but the poor man was dead before he arrived. The jury returned a verdict that JOSEPH SEWELL came by his death by falling off a dray, which passed over his body, when in a state of intoxication and unable to take care of himself. 1845: Married Richard Carpenter (James Pattison 1837). Richard was free.
