Family connections for Edward (Whitton) are: WHITTON Edward (Whitton) son of Edmund (Whitton) & Elizabeth (Bull) was born about 1757. He was tried for highway robbery w/2others, on 11 10 1782, of watch etc of Joseph (Knowles) at Maidstone Kent Quarter Sessions on 10 3 1783, sentenced to death by hanging on 26 10 1783 reprieved to Life in Army at James Fort River Gambia West Africa, sent to hulk CENSUS on Thames River London on 20 10 1784 & arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 1 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH. He was apparantly granted 30acres at Mulgrave Place Hawkesbury. He was Free by Servitude by 1794 & had a relationship with Ann (Slater her first relationship). He died on 6 7 1802 age45 & was buried at Green Hills burial ground South Ck Bridge St; the 30acres at Hawkesbury passed to his spouse. She was tried at Dublin Ireland, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 1 1791 after a voyage of 9months on QUEEN. She was Free by Servitude by 1794. She is recorded in 1802 on 30acres. The 30acres at Hawkesbury was passed to her when her spouse died in 1802. She married secondly as an emancipist John (Norman) (also known as Norman (al Vanheest) his first relationship) emancipist on 28 8 1803 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She was recorded in 1814, apparantly, with her stepfather at Hawkesbury. She is recorded in 1825 with her family at Minto. She married secondly John (Ecc/ggleston/e) emancipist on 5 3 1827 at St Peters CofE Campbelltown. It appears that her children by Richard (Barnes) were adopted by her second husband. She is recorded in 1828 with her family at St Patrick Lower Minto. She died in 1865 age about75 or 2 11 1855 age about59 mother of 14children. ..Richard (Barnes) was born on 5 1 1783. He was tried for stealing at Reading Berkshire Quarter Sessions sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6months on HMS GLATTON. He was Free by Servitude by 1812. In 1825 he was a landholder at Minto. Sentence information from "List of convicts with particulars 1788 - 1825" Original sentence at the trial had been hanging.
The Edward and Ann had at least three children:- Jane (1794-1794); Mary Ann (1790-1865) and William (1799 - ??). Their daughter Mary Ann, later married John Ecclestone (Convict, Lord Sidmouth, 1819). She appears in the 1828 Census [Ref E0273] with her husband and family. After Edward died in July 1802, Ann Slater was granted administration of his estate. Ann can be located on the 1802 Muster [Ref AG 287] with 30 acres of land, 16 acres wheat, 10 acres maize, off stores and with 2 children (Mary Ann and William). Ann married John Norman (Convict, Royal Admiral, 1792) in 1803. The couple did not have any children. Ann herself died around 1806 and does not appear in the 1806 muster. John Norman, however, does [Ref A3271 and also B0201] with 30 acres: 14 wheat, 8 maize, 3 barley and 20 roods potatoes. ## The farm is recorded as held by right of his wife and was clearly the property originally held by Edward. The two children are recorded again in 1814 with their step-father.
Tried & Sentenced Mar 10th 1783-At age 26 yrs ( Occ- Labourer), Tried in Maidenstone before Sir William Henry Ashurst Knt & Jerome Knapp Esq, for highway robbery in company of William Holmes & Richard Buxton, " that on 11 Oct 1782, with force of arms in the Parish aforesaiddid feloniously make assault on Joseph Knowles and steal one watch with the inside made of silver & capped with gold ( Value 6 pounds ), one steel watch chain ( Value 6 pence ), one stone seal set in gold ( Value 10 shillings), one other stone seal set in base metal ( Value 6 pence ) & 20 pieces of gold coin/ guineas ( Value 21 pounds ) Gulity- Sentence to be hanged. Oct 26th 1783- Repreived, conditional of serving for LIFE in the Army at James Fort on the River Gambia West Africa. Oct 20th 1784- Ordered to hulk " Censor" in the Thames River JOINED 1st FLEET to Sydney NSW Feb 24th1787- After 21/2 yrs on hulk,ordered to Portsmouth to join the " Scarborough"( Age 30 y) May 13th 1787- First Fleet set sail for colony. Jan 20th 1788- First Fleet ancored in Botany Bay, after a voyage taking 250 days. Jan 26th 1788-First Fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour 1792 approx-( At Age 35y)Commenced living with Ann Slater(Age 34y) Mar 23 1794- (Aged 37 y)
