Thomas WHITTON was convicted at Perth, Scotland on 17 Oct 1842 for assault & robbery. Previous conviction. 15 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Emerald Isle' arriving 12 Oct 1843. Single man; aged 23yrs; trade - weaver; 5'2 3/4" height; stout build; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes; left hand crippled; can read & write; Protestant. Native place of birth: Kircaldie, Fife, Scotland. Father - James, at Dundee Sisters - Elizabeth & Betsey (ref. Convict Indent record) VDL: 18 months Probation Period. 1st Station Gang - Jericho (inland VDL), then Launceston. Clear conduct record. 30 April 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. 15 Nov 1852: Conditional Pardon approved.
