NSW Convict Index. John Wilkes, alias Johnson, per Lord Lynedock, 1833, Certificate of Freedom, 20 Oct 1840, No 40/1731.
Staffordshire Michaelmas Sessions. John Wilkes (alias Johnson) charged with stealing one fowl, the property of Charles Quinton, at Willenhall. The prosecutor being aware that the prisoner was lurking about the house with a dog, watched and caught him in the act of taking away the fowl. Mr Quinton shot at the dog, and afterwards at the prisoner. Some of the shots lodged in the back of the latter, but happily for the prosecutor had no other effect than causing him to run away the faster ; Mr. Godson defended the prisoner, and cross-examined the witnesses, but nothing was elicited in his favor. Guilty. The prisoner had been convicted of felony in 1829. To be transported for seven years. Mr. Godson hinted to the prosecutor that he might expect to be called upon to answer for his illegal conduct in shooting at the prisoner, under such circumstances as those described.
