Convict Notes


1832: On arrival in VDL, Joseph WILKINSON was listed as 26 years old (very much at odds with the hulk record). He was a widower with one child. In 1843, he received a Conditional Pardon, but in February 1866 he was convicted for petty larceny and received a sentence of 12 months' hard labour (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-46$init=CON31-1-46p169).


OCCUPATION: Farm labourer, miner and collier. CRIME: He was convicted at Lancaster on 8 August 1831 for burglary. He was sentenced to transportation for life. He was admitted to the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich on 8 September 1831. He was sent from the hulk on 10 February for transportation. Joseph WILKINSON was 35, born 1796, according to the hulk record (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
